How this calculator works

The calculator implements the official IELTS band conversion rules from the British Council / IDP. For Listening, raw scores out of 40 map to band scores using a fixed table; the same applies to Reading, but the conversion differs between Academic and General Training. Writing and Speaking are entered directly as half-band scores. The overall band is the average of the four section scores, rounded using IELTS's standard rule: averages ending in .25 round up to the next half-band; averages ending in .75 round up to the next whole band.

How to use it

  1. Choose Academic or General Training module.
  2. Enter your raw Listening score (out of 40) — the calculator converts it to a band.
  3. Enter your raw Reading score (out of 40).
  4. Enter your Writing and Speaking band scores (in 0.5 increments).
  5. Read your overall band and section breakdown.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Reading conversion really different for Academic and General?
Yes. The General Training Reading test is easier, so it requires more correct answers to achieve the same band. For example, 30/40 is roughly Band 7.0 in Academic but Band 6.0 in General.
How is the overall band calculated?
Add the four section band scores and divide by four. If the average ends in .25, round up to the next half-band; if it ends in .75, round up to the next whole band.
What band do I need to study abroad?
UK and Australia typically require 6.0–6.5 overall with no band below 5.5–6.0. Scholarships often require 7.0+.
Is the Listening conversion the same on every test?
The official conversion table is fixed, but individual test versions are equated so difficulty is comparable. The calculator uses the standard published table.
Are these results official?
No. Only your Test Report Form (TRF) issued by the British Council or IDP is official. This is an estimate to plan your preparation.
