How GPA is Calculated in Bangladesh (SSC, HSC, University)
Step-by-step explanation of how SSC, HSC, and university CGPA are calculated in Bangladesh, including the 4th-subject rule and the UGC 4.00 scale.
"What's your GPA?" is one of the most common questions a Bangladeshi student hears — from teachers, parents, university admission officers, and employers. But surprisingly few students can actually explain how the number is calculated. SSC, HSC, and university CGPA each use slightly different rules, and getting them mixed up leads to wrong predictions, wrong applications, and wrong scholarship calculations.
This guide explains exactly how GPA is calculated at every level of education in Bangladesh, using the official rules of the Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC).
SSC GPA — how it works
SSC (Secondary School Certificate) is graded on a 5.00 scale by all general education boards (Dhaka, Chattogram, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal, Sylhet, Jashore, Comilla, Dinajpur, Mymensingh) and Madrasah and Technical boards.
Marks-to-grade conversion
| Marks | Letter Grade | Grade Point |
|---|---|---|
| 80–100 | A+ | 5.00 |
| 70–79 | A | 4.00 |
| 60–69 | A− | 3.50 |
| 50–59 | B | 3.00 |
| 40–49 | C | 2.00 |
| 33–39 | D | 1.00 |
| 0–32 | F | 0.00 (Fail) |
How the GPA is averaged
SSC GPA is the simple average of grade points of the main subjects (excluding the 4th subject). Bangla, English, Mathematics, Religion, ICT, and the three group subjects (Science / Commerce / Arts) are counted.
The 4th-subject rule
If your grade point in the 4th subject is greater than 2, the excess above 2 is added to your total grade points before averaging. Example: A+ in 4th subject = 5.00, so 5 − 2 = 3 bonus points added.
You can verify this calculation instantly using our SSC GPA Calculator.
HSC GPA — how it works
HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate) uses the same grading scale as SSC. The calculation rules are also the same — average of main subjects, plus bonus from the 4th subject if grade point exceeds 2.
The only difference: HSC has different group-specific main subjects. Science group includes Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Higher Math; Business Studies includes Accounting, Finance & Banking, Business Organisation; Humanities includes Economics, Civics, Logic, etc.
Use our HSC GPA Calculator to compute it with the 4th-subject bonus applied automatically.
University CGPA — how it works
Bangladeshi universities, following the UGC (University Grants Commission) standard, use a 4.00 scale, not 5.00. This is the single biggest source of confusion when students compare school and university grades.
UGC grading scale
| Marks | Letter Grade | Grade Point |
|---|---|---|
| 80–100 | A+ | 4.00 |
| 75–79 | A | 3.75 |
| 70–74 | A− | 3.50 |
| 65–69 | B+ | 3.25 |
| 60–64 | B | 3.00 |
| 55–59 | B− | 2.75 |
| 50–54 | C+ | 2.50 |
| 45–49 | C | 2.25 |
| 40–44 | D | 2.00 |
| <40 | F | 0.00 |
The credit-weighted formula
Unlike SSC/HSC, university GPA is credit-weighted. Each course has a credit value (usually 3 or 4), and your GPA for a semester is:
Semester GPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit) ÷ Σ Credits
Example:
| Course | Credits | Grade | GP | GP × Credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CSE101 | 3 | A+ | 4.00 | 12.00 |
| MAT101 | 3 | A | 3.75 | 11.25 |
| ENG101 | 3 | B+ | 3.25 | 9.75 |
| PHY101 | 4 | A− | 3.50 | 14.00 |
Semester GPA = 47.00 ÷ 13 = 3.62
How CGPA is calculated
Cumulative GPA across all semesters uses the same formula — total quality points divided by total credits attempted. Our CGPA Calculator handles this automatically and includes a target-GPA planner.
Common confusion points
"My SSC GPA is 5.00, why is my university CGPA only 3.50?"
Different scales. SSC's 5.00 is roughly equivalent to UGC's 4.00. A 3.50 CGPA on the 4.00 scale is approximately 87.5% — equivalent to A+ at SSC.
"Why didn't the 4th subject apply at university?"
The 4th-subject bonus rule is unique to SSC and HSC. University courses are all credit-weighted; there is no equivalent.
"Some universities use a 4.00 scale; my university uses 4.00 too but the cutoffs are slightly different."
Most public and private universities in Bangladesh follow UGC's scale exactly, but a few (especially some private medical and engineering universities) use slightly different cutoffs. Always check your university's official grading sheet.
Converting Bangladesh CGPA to international scales
For study abroad, you'll often need to express your CGPA on a different scale:
- US 4.0 scale: A Bangladesh 4.00 CGPA is roughly equivalent to a US 4.0 GPA. Most US universities accept WES evaluations as the authoritative conversion.
- UK classification: CGPA 3.75+ ≈ First Class; 3.25–3.74 ≈ Upper Second (2:1); 2.75–3.24 ≈ Lower Second (2:2).
- Percentage: Most universities issue a transcript with both CGPA and percentage. Don't try to convert one to the other yourself.
